The Growth Mindset

I thought watching Carol Dweck and the growth mindset was interesting.  I had never heard of hear before but what she talks about I have experienced before. I feel that I am in the growth mindset now, but I used to have a fixed mindset.  I had a fixed mindset when it comes to schooling because if something becomes too hard or I felt like I was failing at something I would just withdraw or just quit what I was doing to save myself embarrassment from my family.  My parents taught me to always strive for As but now that I have been in college for a while, I definitely can see that as are not what it’s all about. Why I think I am in the growth mindset now is because whenever obstacles come in front of me, instead of running away, I embrace them and try to figure out the best solution to overcome them. I feel that I am constantly learning and evolving with everything I do.  The biggest challenges I face at OU are the ones when I have a class and the teacher is introducing material that I have no idea what it is.  Instead of just giving up I meet with the teacher so he/she can better explain it to me, and I can pass the class.  I have also learned I can do anything I set my mind to.  I do think the growth mindset is something that interest me for the rest of the semester. I am really excited about my Female Heroism in Hollywood class because I feel it will allow me to see films from the women’s point of view instead of just a male.  My personal goal would be to get 3 A’s and 1 B for the semester. I might be concerned about my Media Controversy class because it sounds like it shall be really time consuming and I don’t have a lot of free time because I work every day and go to school. Overall, I feel like if I continue to learn about the Growth Mindset then it will help me finish college and conquer my problem classes.

  1. Hi Andrew! Really great job on giving a back story to relate to growth mindset. I, too, feel like I have had similar experiences. I put a lot of pressure on myself when it comes to school and sometimes I want to give up and change my major to something easier, but I push and motivate myself to keep going and strive towards my original goals. I am glad that you have found your growth mindset.

  2. Hi Andrew! I really enjoyed your take on Carol Dweck’s video. I also feel as though I had a fixed mindset. I think mine was more in high school leading into my freshman year of college. I was very set on the idea that certain people were always going to be smart and I was going to be average. This way of thinking can be toxic. I really appreciated you giving a personal story about your experience with the fixed/growth mindset!
