Introduction to Me
What is up everyone! I am Andrew Albright I am 26 years old and a junior here at OU. My major is film and media studies with a minor in Spanish. The coolest thing about my major would have to being able to view movies, that I had previously watched for pleasure and look at them through different eyes. Being able to critique flaws and inconsistencies is fun to me but it definitely can be a hindrance when I go see a movie with someone or by myself because then I find myself figuring out what is wrong with the film. The best class that I took last semester would have to be the Hollywood Musical class. The reason for that is because it was exciting to learn about the different dances, styles of shots, and use of setting to advance the narrative. Before this class I never thought any of those did anything but make the film look good but after that class I can see how everything in a musical has its place to advance the story. My biggest accomplish last semester was finishing at OCCC with a perfect 4.0. Even though it is a community college that was a big accomplishment for because until recently I have always struggled to stay motivated to study and do my best in school.
Over the summer break I went to my uncles ranch up in Pecos, New Mexico and I got to fly fish and off-road which I enjoy a lot. My favorite books would have to be the Harry Potter series, or anything written by Michael Connelly, who wrote the Lincoln Lawyer. When it comes to my favorite types of films, I would have to choose horror. My girlfriend hates horror so if a new one comes out; I usually have to go alone. Right now, my top two favorite films are Aliens and It Chapter 1 but I am sure Chapter 2 will become my all-time favorite when it comes out next month. Now my musical tastes are all over the place, I like everything from 80’s music to hard metal, but as long as the song has a good beat and vocals, I will like it.
My long-term goal is to shoot video for either OU football, like I am doing now, do it for the NFL, or direct films. A short-term goal is to finally graduate from college because it seems like I have been here for forever. My family has one dog named Lexa and she is a black lab. She is super sweet yet so lazy and that is probably because I trained her. I really enjoy eating all types of food except spicy, cucumbers, and bananas. A fun fact is that I worked at a culinary school for 3 years and have been working since I was 15. Some of the hobbies that I have are playing video games, watching Netflix, working out, going to OU sporting events, going to films, hanging out with my girlfriend, and listening to music. If I had an extra day of fun I would spend it sleeping and watching Mind-hunter.

Your major is very interesting, but I can see how seeing new movies can be frustrating because you're basically trained to find all the things wrong with movies. I side with your girlfriend when it comes to horror movies, boy do I not like those hahah!
ReplyDeleteShooting video for OU football would be awesome, being a cheerleader, I get chills every single time there is a game. It would be so cool if you got to shoot the hype video played at games!
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on getting a 4.0 at OCCC, it's definitely something you should be super proud of! College classes are hard no matter where you take them and that's a huge accomplishment. I think it's cool that you're able to take what you've learned in your classes and apply it outside in the world with the things you watch! I'm hoping that IT Chapter 2 is good, but I won't hold my breath. I liked the first one too much and I'm hoping that Chapter 2 will live up to my expectations. I hope you have a great semester!
Oh, a film major: that sounds great, Andrew! Storytelling with video and storytelling with just words are both powerful skills, and I hope this class will give you a chance to take what you've learned about video storytelling and see how it plays out with words on a page (including webpages ha ha). And I am such a fan of OCCC and all the community colleges; I'm active in the world of teacher-Twitter and most of my colleagues there teach at community colleges. That's where the real work of American higher education is begin done, and I am glad you had a good career there which has brought you to OU!
ReplyDeleteOf course Harry Potter totally resonates with the contents of this class (you will read a lot of Rowling's own sources in the readings for this class!)... but for sheer style, I vote for Michael Connelly: that man knows how to write! There was one summer a few years ago where I must have read a dozen of his novels. If I were going to sit down and try to write crime fiction, he is someone I would borrow ideas from. So, maybe you will write some Hogwarts stories for this class, or give crime fiction a try... or an epic football story! Anything is possible, and I hope you will have fun with it! :-)
Hey Andrew!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, CONGRATS on the 4.0. You own that. I also went to community college (but I was at Rose State) before coming to OU, and you know what? We both will still have that Bachelor's degree from OU just the same. :) I'm also a 35 year old senior with a bunch of kids, so if you want to talk about school taking forever, I'm here for that, ha ha.
Your major sounds really interesting. I had a class way back in high school called Film Production and we watched a bunch of movies and had to analyze them. It was neat.
Hi Andrew! I have to start with a huge congratulations for the 4.0!! A perfect GPA is a huge accomplishment; it doesn't matter what school you earned it at. I'm a huge proponent for community colleges.
ReplyDeleteI find it super cool that you're a a film and media studies major here. I'm a Spanish minor, too, and I love to watch movies in Spanish. One of my all-time favorites is Todo Sobre Mi Madre. Have you seen it? :)
Emily
Hi Andrew! I think it's extremely interesting that you are a film and media studies major! I think that it would be so cool to understand what's behind the makings of films, however I can also see where your frustration comes from not being able to watch movies without noticing the flaws in detail. Also, congrats on the 4.0!!! That's a huge accomplishment, no matter where you achieve it from! Best of luck finishing up school and with your future aspirations!
ReplyDeleteHi Andrew! Your major is so dope man!! I am a CMP major so I decently close to what you are going for. It sucks that you notice the smallest of details in movies and I bet that takes out the enjoyment of the movies, but I think it is pretty neat that you have the ability to do that. That 4.0 is so impressive and wish I was that skilled to be able to earn that.
ReplyDeleteHey Andrew!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love film and media, so your major honestly sounds like a dream come true to me! One of my favorite movies to watch is Whiplash by Damien Chazelle. What's your "island" movie that you could watch forever? I'm a biochemistry major, so I wish sometimes that I went with something without tons of science within it - I have a 3.97 GPA, so I'm only a tad bit behind you.
Hope you can finish this year with that 4.0!
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteThat 4.0 is awesome, congrats!! That's definitely an accomplishment. Film and Media studies sound fascinating. I'm a bit of a movie junkie as a hobby so I appreciate all the technical skills and thoughtful proudction that goes into crafting great films. It's so cool that you shoot video for OU football, I see those videos on twitter a lot and they're always top-notch. Best of luck on all of your goals!
Andrew,
ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons I love taking classes is seeing things in a different way. Also different jobs do the same thing. I work at an Italian restaurant and I see food and drinks in a totally different way now. If something is not authentic Italian I find myself being very critical of it.
I did recently get into some horror films. I saw IT 2 last week and it was awesome, I think you will like it a lot. If you like filming sports you should try interning at The OU Daily! It is a great place to get a start and some experience.
Hi Andrew! Hey, we both wrote about Pygmalion and Galatea, we're both film majors, we both favor the horror genre, we're both juniors, and we both went to OCCC! That's pretty rad. I'm actually a former film major. I went through the film program at OCCC and, while it was awesome, I realized that the cornerstone of any good film is the writing, which is a skill that I want to hone and cultivate in myself, so I transferred to OU and became a Professional Writing major. Can't wait to read more from you this semester!

Howdy Andrew,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the 4.0, that is a real accomplishment. I do not think where or what matters, a 4.0 takes effort and is certainly something to be proud of, good job! I managed to pull off a 4.0 last year and I am still proud of it. Staying motivated is hard, it is something that I have definitely struggled with. I am a psych major and I have spent many long hours researching motivation and trying to figure out how to motivate myself and others.
Hi Andrew, it's great to meet you!
ReplyDeleteMy family also had labs growing up - is yours American or English? Either way, they're fantastic dogs. Congratulations on your 4.0 at OCCC, by the way! Also, how cool that you shoot video for OU football! I bet that's a fun job to have! Best of luck with your semester, and I'm sure I'll probably see more of your posts as the semester progresses!
Hi Andrew,
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you! Congratulations on your 4.0 last semester, that is a huge accomplishment and something to be very proud of. Your major sounds so interesting, I love watching the OU football videos they are always so good. I am sure with all your experience that you already have in film you will have an easier time getting a job for direct films or the NFL. I cannot wait to read more of your stories this semester!
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteYou have a really interesting and fun major. I think looking at movies through different lenses and view points adds a lot to the cinematic experience. Way to go on getting a 4.0 last semester! Who cares if it was at OCCC, a 4 point is a 4 point. They show up the same on your transcript so they are the same in my book.
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, congrats on that 4.0, that's something to be very proud of! I think that your major is so cool, and I sorta can relate with music. Ever since I started producing music, I listen to it very differently than I did before, now listening very analytically to songs I used to simply enjoy. I would love to have that perspective on movies as well. I look forward to reading your stories!
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteI find your major to be very interesting because I too am a huge fan of movies. What is your favorite movie of all time? My favorites are the ones that have a very big plot twist at the end. For example, Shutter Island and Collateral Beauty are two incredible films if you are looking for recommendations. Congrats on the 4.0 too, that is amazing! Keep up the good work!
Hi Andrew,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I just want to say I really like the layout of your blog. It looks really nice. That's cool that you're into movie critiquing. An intern I was with this summer does that as a hobby and does reviews of movies. I've never thought of doing that but it sounds pretty enjoyable to me. New Mexico has some beautiful scenery. Have you heard of Ruidoso, NM? It's amazing and I want to retire there someday. Anyway good luck this semester!
Hi Andrew,
ReplyDeleteThat sounds inconvenient at the movies — I’m sure the interesting film trivia makes you popular company, and then the analysis has your companions groaning good-naturedly.
That’s very cool that you’re working for OU Football — what’s your position? Camera op.? Editing? It must be quite a production to film the games and promotional materials; there’s just so much of it.
It sounds like you’ve got a lot of drive and a plan laid out ahead, which is awesome. Best of luck!
Best,
A.M.
Hi Andrew, I think it's awesome that you are studying Film and congrats on that 4.0! That's awesome man! I really appreciate how you are pursuing something completely different from what a lot of other people are studying and I think that creativity is going to really help you with this class! I look forward to reading a bunch more of your stories!
ReplyDeleteAndrew,
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the 4.0, that is such a great accomplishment. I have always been really bad at watching movies, I do not do it that often and all my friends wish I would. I love that you have found ways to put your passions to work and do something you love. However, horror movies are my favorite and my girlfriend does not like those either. Can't wait to read your stories!
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteI also took some classes at OCCC and might take one more next semester! No matter where you take classes, it is always a challenge. Congratulations on your 4.0! I know how hard it can be staying motivated. Education is a long process, and it is always one thing after the next. If I'm not in school, I'm doing something education related such as shadowing or volunteering. Anyways, wishing you the best of luck in your academic journey!
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteWow! I do not have the strengths to be a film major. However, I absolutely love movies and watching films. This must be such a fun major, and that is so great you are pursuing it into your career goals. That is amazing you have a 4.0. That is such an accomplishment that requires discipline and dedication.
Can't wait to read your work!
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteWow what an interesting major. I found it fascinating how you described the ability to watch movies from a different perspective. I have always struggled to learn foreign languages so that is also amazing that you are able to study two separate subjects like that. A 4.0 is so impressive! Hopefully you were able to realize that all of your hard work does pay off! I look forward to reading more of your work this semester! Good Luck!
Hey Andrew!
ReplyDeleteIt was so great getting to read your introduction post! Your major seems so interesting. I haven't seen either of your favorite movies, but they sound cool! I love watching movies, especially comedies and thrillers. One of my favorite movies is The Holiday- I watch it all year long, not just at Christmas time. I look forward to reading your story and website throughout the semester!
Hello Andrew,
ReplyDeleteI have a friend named Andrew who is also studying film and media! Weird coincidence. I've talked with him quite a bit about his major and it seems like a very interesting field to be a part of! As for the 4.0 that is an extreme accomplishment that you should definitely be proud of! Not many people at all can say they've done that!
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteYour major sounds like fun! Although I can see how it would be a bit of a hindrance. I'm not sure how I would feel about watching some of my favorite movies again and now finding all these flaws in them. Congratulations on finishing with a 4.0! Community college or university, that's a huge accomplishment! I cannot watch horror movies, but my sister loves them so she usually finds a way to trick me into watching them her. You filmed a video for OU football?? That's awesome! I bet that was so much fun!
Hello Andrew!
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of funny but me and girlfriend are the opposite. She absolutely lovesssss scary and horror movies and I despise them. However every time a new scary movie comes out she doesn't go alone or with a friend. She drags me to them. At the beginning I was really scared of them but overtime I've gotten better. The stuff I hate is gore so as long as they're not gory I can manage lol. Best of luck on the rest of your semester!
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteYour major sounds so awesome and will hopefully always be something your passionate about! Anything that's not a 9-5 desk job sounds so much better to me, which is why I want to go into a more creative field as well (graphic design/advertising). I'm also so jealous that your minor is Spanish, I had to take three semesters of it for my major and had a pretty hard time with it so I'm always jealous of anyone who can pick up on it easily. Good luck this semester!
Hi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteLooooooveeeeee my fellow film lovers. I wish I could major in CMP or FMS but I'm too close to graduation to switch at this point. Also, now that It: Chapter 2 is out, I'd love to know what you thought of it! I'm from Tulsa, so I love anything Bill Hader is in by default. Gotta support my T-Town boy.
Best of luck to you for the rest of this semester!
Hey Andrew!
ReplyDeleteI had always thought about minoring in film and media studies. It seems like such a fun program. I am a huge horror fan too, but luckily my girlfriend loves them too so I never have to deprive myself of a good scare. What did you think of IT Chapter 2? I thought it was great and fun. I just like to be a little more scared.
Hi Andrew! I think it's so cool how you get to watch old movies and view them from a different perspective again because of your major. But I'm sure that can get frustrating when you go watch a new movie and you get more focused on critiquing it instead of just enjoying it. Also, good job on finishing with a 4.0! That is so impressive! It takes a lot of hardwork and dedication to maintain good grades throughout the semester. Good luck to you for the rest of the semester!
ReplyDeleteHey Andrew! It was awesome getting to read a little bit about you! Pecos, New Mexico seems like a really good time! I love your major! I love movies and film and I would love to one day be involved in the production of one, however unlikely that is!
ReplyDeleteHi Andrew! That is so cool that you are a film major! I wish I had the knowledge to critique movies through a different lens, and I can imagine your education has completely transformed how you view them. Congrats on getting the 4.0! That is a tremendous accomplishment no matter where it is, and I wish the best for the future!
ReplyDeleteHello Andrew,
ReplyDeleteI feel like school is never-ending as well! I am graduating this semester but recently have thought about getting my Masters degree. It is very cool that you do film. You said you video OU. Do you work for the OU Daily? I work there right now as a copy editor! I kind of understand what you mean about picking apart a movie because of your job. I am a server and so anytime I go to a restaurant I pick apart what the server is doing. It can be annoying sometimes. Congrats on getting 4.0! I went to a community college as well, Rose State. I really enjoyed it there actually. I wish you luck on the rest of your school!
Hi Andrew! I loved reading your introduction and getting to hear about your passion for your major! That's awesome that you have found something that you love to do and that you have continued to pursue it through various trials and tribulations! I am also getting my minor in Spanish and I am interested to know what you think of the minor courses so far? Great job and good luck the rest of the semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Andrew!
ReplyDeleteThis is my second time here on your page. I can feel your passion for film through your writing. I can tell that you are very hardworking and am confident that you will find great success in that industry. I never went to community college but I think it is a great way to save money and prepare yourself for college! I wish you the best with the rest of the semester and hope you continue to pursue excellence academically
What's up Andrew!
ReplyDeleteI think it is so cool that you are a film and media studies major! I have had friends in that program at OU and i have seen some of the work they do. Not only is it really cool but a whole lot of it seems very difficult. One wouldn't expect that at first glance but I can appreciate the work you do. I love reading your stories, keep up the good work!
