Reading Notes, Noah Part A
Plot
The story that I am focusing involves Noah and the Ark. A man named Lamech had a son he named Noah. Noah was a great man who followed the commandments to the letter and never did anything that would hurt God or anyone around him. He was known for giving praise to God even when God might not have been involved in what Noah was doing. As Noah aged he had Shem, Ham, and Japheth and they, like their father, heaped praised on God and lived by the commandments justly. One day God saw all the war and diseases that man had given to the world and grew angry. He decided that he needed to cleanse the world and that if he were to start over then maybe things would be different. God knew how faithful Noah had been to him so he commanded him to build an Ark so that he and his family could survive the flood on. He also commanded Noah to get two of each animal on the ark, a male and female, so that they could repopulate the Earth after the water had receded. Noah, living for God, obeyed the directions and built the biggest Ark any had ever seen.
Questions
Why did God choose Noah? I feel that there could have been multiple people who did exactly what Noah did and God selected him. I wonder if it is because in all that Noah did he repeatedly thank God and praised him for everything. It seems that when God gave Noah the commandment to build the ark this was the first time that Noah was doing something that God requested. Also, I was always taught that God was merciful and just but killing off the whole planet and only allowing a few to live does not seem like fairness to me. I feel like God could have just sent visions to everyone stating what he was going to do if they did not clean up their act. I mean, it might not have worked but at least he could have tried it and therefore kept more people alive.
Reaction:
While I do not feel that it was ok that Noah and his family were the only people picked to survive the flood I do understand it. After reading and rereading the passage it is clearer to me now that Noah never did anything against God and he was always the first one to praise him even when God had nothing to do with what happened. Always in the back of my mind will be, what would have happened if God had allowed more than one family survive the flood. It does make me happy to see God rewarding a man of great faith with the chance to survive. That gives me the impression that if we praise God for what he gives us and are always following the rules he has set then he will protect us no matter what.
