Week 9 Story: China: The Three Evils

Childhood
In a land full of mystery and wonder there lived a young boy named Jim. Jim realized that he was much stronger, faster, and he never got hurt.  One day when he was sword fighting with the younger kids, one of them accidently cut his arm.  Instantly Jim reached to cover the wound and ran home to his mother.  As he arrived at his home, he noticed that his arm was not hurting and that there was not blood dripping down his arm anymore.  So, Jim decided to look at where he had been cut and what he saw astounded him, there was no wound, just a faint line of a scar of where he should have been bleeding. When he went into his house, he told his mom of what had happened and started to ask a lot of questions as to why he was different than most boys. His mother promised him to tell him after she and his father returned from an event that was being hosted in the town that night.  As night came, Jim sat outside looking down at the town wondering what answers he would receive form his mother. All of a sudden, Jim heard screams coming from the town and saw a group of Huns burning down the city.  Jim was frightened but wanted to try to find his parents so he ran down the hill to see if he could find them.  As Jim got down to the town he watched in horror as the Huns cut down people right and left. He soon realized that he would not be able to find his family and tried to find a hiding spot as to avoid being spotted. Eventually finding a little cave in a cliff he fell asleep.  Once morning had hit, he went out in search of his family and he was devasted with what he saw. All around him were dead bodies and homes burnt to ashes.  As he combed the ashes for his family a couple of Hun soldiers saw him and surrounded him.  Jim was scared that they would kill him but instead they gave him alcohol.  As they left, Jim was surrounded by two jugs of wine. He was curious and decided to take a swig.  He instantly liked the taste of it, and he realized the more he drank the less sad he felt.

Young Adult
As the years passed Jim began to drink to cope with the fact of losing his mother and father and that turned into something of a drunk.  He would travel between the three cities nearest him looking for free handouts of wine or beer. No one knew of Jim’s powers so when anyone ever offended him or just annoyed him, he would beat them within an inch of their life to remind everyone not to mess with him.  Eventually, everyone in the cities became aware of who he was and the towns each had a different way of alerting their citizens when he was about to stroll into town.  Once Jim was spotted, people would rush into their homes and barricade the shops and taverns up as not to incite his rage.   As this continued throughout the years Jim eventually would just get into a blind rage and destroy anything that he came into contact with.  What the people did not realize is that he was alone and felt abandoned because there was no one else like him in the world. One day when Jim was in a blind rage he came upon a mandarin.  The man told him that his name was Dwight and that he had been since by the king to figure out why there were three evils terrorizing the three cities.  Jim was shocked, he was unaware that there was evil in the land proceeded to ask, “What are these three evils that you speak of.  Tell me where to find them and I will dispatch of them.” Dwight responded, “One is a dragon, another is a cow, and the third is a man called Jim.”  Jim was stunned when he heard he was the final evil but did not let the man know who he was. When Dwight asked who he was, Jim said, “They call me Michael, and I would gladly defeat these three Evils that you speak of.”  Dwight told Michael (Jim) the weaknesses of the dragon and the cow but he did not know of one for Jim.  As Jim set off on his journey, he realized he would never be able to come back to the cities for fear the people would let Dwight know who he really was. Eventually, Jim came across the dragon and cow and was able to dispatch them with ease thanks to Dwight’s information about their weaknesses.

Old Age
After slaying the creatures Jim never returned to the three cities.  As he started to grow older, he reflected on his life and realized that was not what his mother and father would have wanted for him.  He vowed to get revenge for their death and that only after that would he finally be able to rest. Jim started to hear reports through the countryside of the same Huns who had destroyed his town.  He started off on his long quest to end their tyranny. It took around 15 years, but Jim had finally found them.  Jim decided to attack at night and when he did, everything happened fast.  As the sun rose up into the sky the ground before Jim was soaked with the blood from the dead Huns. As he surveyed his kills, he heard Dwight’s voice behind him.  Jim stood in shock as Dwight told him how he and the army had followed him to make sure he was able to complete his mission. Even more astounding was that Dwight knew he was actually Jim the whole time and had heard about what happened to his mother and father. Jim acknowledged who he was and told Dwight that he was ready to finally rest, and with that Dwight took Jim’s sword and delivered a killing blow.  All Jim saw was a bright light as he realized he had regained his honor.

Authors Note:
I really wanted to focus on his childhood and why Jim turned out the way he did. In the original story the main characters name is Dschou Tschu and the mandarin doesn’t have a name.  This story made Dschou sound like a complete jackass and I wanted to completely change it. I wanted to give the reader a character they could sympathize with and that would make sense as to why he was the way he was.  The way that I chose Dwight, Michael, and Jim is because I am a huge office fan and thought it be fun to have a story featuring them.  Also, the beginning of his story and the ending is more important than him slaying the dragon and cow.  The cow was actually supposed to be a tiger, but I thought it would be funnier if it was a cow.  Overall, I just hope I gave more realistic character that people could relate to.

  1. Hello Andrew!

This is a great story! It's full of drama and action making it very exciting! I wonder why the Hun's left him with alcohol as a kid? I can't imagine how depressed he must have been all those years. I'm glad Jim was able to turn a new leaf and find peace after all those years. It's sad that he had to die at the end tho. Great job!

  2. Hi Andrew! I really liked your story, especially how you separated it into his childhood, adult life and old age. I thought it was so sad to basically read how he became an alcoholic but I was so glad that it had a happy ending (since he found peace). I'm also ironically watching The Office as I'm doing my comments so I thought it was super funny that you happened to name your characters after them.

  3. Hi Andrew, great story from week 9! I have already read a few of your stories from this semester but have really enjoyed them and wanted to come back to see where you have taken them. I thought the way your broke up this week 9 story into the different age groups of Jim’s life was a very interesting take. Writing the story this way helps readers feel as though they are there through each stage of his life. Great job!

  4. Hey Andrew!

I really liked your story this week. I thought it was cool how you broke it down in to three separate life stages. It really enhanced your story. I think you do a great job of telling a tragic story, and it makes the resolution at the end feel that much better. I will have to check out the original story.

  5. Hello Andrew!
I really liked the way that you set up the story being a "childhood, young adult, and old age" section. I am curious what his powers actually meant. I know that his parents were going to tell him before he died. I wonder if Dwight knew what his powers meant because he seemed so wise, especially since he knew it was Jim the whole time and not Michael.

  6. Hey Andrew! I like that you separated the story into three sections; it made it easier to read. For further digestibility, I'd recommend creating paragraphs within the sections so it's not one big block of text. Other than that, though, I really enjoyed your story! You're an excellent writer, and I thought you retold this story really well.
