Reading Part B: Great Plains: Why the Possum Plays Dead

This is a story I actually liked reading.  To me it does help explain why the possum is known for playing dead when being hunter by humans or animals.  I thought the way the story was structured really help move it along.  Yes, it may not be the longest story we have read but with the 500 words we are given it is able to achieve a lot.  First, we still see that the Rabbit or Hare is still a jerk to most animals.  This is first shown through the story of the Tortoise and the Hare.  The rabbit is only thinking about his own self interest in that story. In this one he also only cares about getting himself a bride while turning against his "friend" the possum.  While we do not know why no one wants to marry either the rabbit or the possum we feel sorry for them.  Well, that is until the rabbit only gets a wife for himself and doesn't wait until the possum to show up to help him give him a wife. Second, we find out why the possum plays dead.  It is because other animals tried to kill him for no reason, His "friend" turned his back on him and he was left all alone with no one to help defend him.
I feel that this tory could relate to real life.  Sometimes, we have wingman's or wingwoman's who we bring out to help us find a girl/guy to date.  They often say they are trying to help us out but if they happen to be single, then they will try to look out for just themselves sometimes. This story also reminds me that we should look out for ourself and not depend too much on others.
